When a drain keeps clogging, there are two ways to clear it, and they are not interchangeable. Snaking punches a hole through the blockage. Hydro jetting scours the entire inside of the pipe. Choosing the wrong one is why some clogs come back within weeks.
What snaking actually does
A drain snake, or auger, is a flexible cable fed down the line with a cutting head on the end. It breaks through the blockage or hooks it and pulls it out.
It works well for: a single slow sink, tub or shower, hair and soap clogs near the trap, toilet blockages, and one off obstructions where something solid went down that should not have.
Its limitation: a snake makes a channel through the clog, it does not clean the pipe wall. If the real problem is a decade of grease coating the inside of a kitchen line, water will flow again for a few weeks and then slow right back down as the opening re-closes.
What hydro jetting does
Hydro jetting sends a high pressure stream of water through the line with a specialised nozzle that sprays backwards as well as forwards. It cuts through the blockage and then scrubs the full circumference of the pipe on the way back.
It works well for: grease buildup in kitchen lines, mineral scale, root intrusion in sewer lines, recurring clogs in the same spot, and main line blockages affecting the whole house.
Its limitation: it needs a pipe that can take the pressure. On an old clay or badly corroded cast iron line, jetting can turn a crack into a break, which is exactly why a camera inspection should come first.
How to tell which one you need
Two questions usually settle it.
Is it one fixture or several?
One slow sink is almost always a local clog, and a snake handles it. Several fixtures backing up at once, gurgling toilets, or water surfacing in a shower when you flush means the problem is further down toward the main line, and that is jetting territory.
Is this the first time, or the fourth?
A one off clog gets snaked. A drain that has been cleared three times in two years is telling you the pipe wall is coated or something structural is wrong. Snaking it a fourth time is buying a few more weeks, not fixing anything.
Why the camera inspection matters
Running a camera through the line before choosing a method takes a few minutes and answers the question properly. It shows whether you are looking at grease, roots, a bellied section where the pipe sags and collects debris, or a genuine break.
That distinction matters because a bellied or collapsed section will never stay clear no matter how many times it is cleaned. Clearing it repeatedly is money spent on a symptom. A word on chemical drain cleaners
They are worth avoiding in most Mesa homes. They do very little against roots or hardened grease, they can damage older galvanised and cast iron pipe, and if they fail to clear the line you now have a drain full of caustic liquid that someone has to work in.
What about the roots?
In older Mesa neighbourhoods with mature trees, root intrusion is one of the most common causes of a recurring main line clog. Jetting clears them effectively, but roots grow back through the same crack or joint they got in through. If a camera shows root intrusion, the real fix is sewer line repair, with jetting as maintenance in between rather than the solution.
